According to the "2022 Global Status Report on Buildings and Construction", the carbon dioxide emissions from building operations in 2021 reached a historical high of about 100 billion tons, an increase of about 5% from 2020. In contrast, the total carbon dioxide emissions from the entire building process in China in 2020 were 5.08 billion tons, accounting for 50.9% of domestic carbon emissions, which is more than half of the carbon emissions. This makes it urgent for the construction industry to implement the "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" strategy.
Currently, the amount of construction and decoration waste in our country accounts for 30% to 40% of the total urban waste, with its stock being 10 times that of household waste and its growth rate being 6 times faster than that of household waste, making it the largest source of urban waste. So how to deal with the annual production of 150 million tons of construction and decoration waste?
The preparation technology of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF) from construction waste is a carbon reduction tool in the circular economy of the construction industry.
Recently, the decoration waste resource utilization center in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province officially began operation. This is the first system for the preparation of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF) from decoration waste to be put into operation in Yangjiang, and it can process 20 tons of decoration waste per hour. It will empower the resource utilization of waste in Yangjiang's waste-free city construction, reduce the pollution of landfilling decoration waste, and help reduce carbon emissions.
In this project, the raw material is decoration waste, which is processed into RDF/SRF alternative fuels with a size of about 80mm. The combustion calorific value is about 5000 large calories, which is more than 80% of standard coal, and the CO2 emissions are only one-quarter of those of coal. Therefore, it is an important "weapon" for all coal-fired enterprises and construction enterprises to face the "carbon reduction" test.
In the initial design stage of this project, Shredder conducted multiple rounds of in-depth communication with the client, focusing on core requirements such as "high production capacity and low energy consumption." Taking into account the characteristics of construction waste, the "finer crushing, faster separation, and more accurate selection" concept was adopted, and multiple tests were conducted on equipment performance and system production capacity. The preparation process was continuously optimized, resulting in a qualitative leap in the overall system's production capacity, energy consumption, and product quality. A unique construction waste RDF/SRF alternative fuel preparation system was formed.

Benefits for Enterprises:
[Old Model]: The waste treatment cost for the combustible portion of the construction waste processed by the enterprise is 100-150 yuan/ton of waste.
[New Model]: In addition to the old model, the combustible portion of the waste is prepared into RDF/SRF alternative fuel and sold to coal-consuming enterprises such as power plants and cement plants, generating approximately 250 yuan/ton of revenue. After deducting the impurity loss and costs, the overall profit is about 200 yuan/ton. The profitability of the enterprise has been significantly improved, thus achieving the maximum value of construction waste.
Benefits for Coal-consuming Enterprises:
If 200 tons of RDF/SRF alternative fuel are produced daily, it is equivalent to about 140 tons of standard coal. In 2023, the price of standard coal is about 1100 yuan, while the comprehensive cost of the alternative fuel is about 350 yuan/ton. Therefore, using alternative fuel in industrial kilns daily can save 84,000 yuan.
